Collage:

The masked Paradox of affection

I used magazine pieces to create the background, girl, and butterflies. Then I used citrosolve to lift the color from them and then used oil pastels on the background and the girl to add more depth and contrast. This image represents what life is like now, socially distanced and masked up, compared to how it was before covid-19 portrayed by the gathered people in close proximity at the beach.

How has Covid-19 affected people's lives psychologically and physically?

This image contrasts what life was like before covid-19, portrayed by the gathered people in close proximity at the beach, to now, socially distanced and masked up. The butterflies epitomize the drastic change the world has seen due to covid; we were originally free and flying around but now are cocooned and quarantined. They also symbolize the hope of the future, reminding us that even though this virus is not going to last forever, we have to be present in the moment and each do our individual role to prevent the extension and spread of it. Psychologically, this virus has taken a toll on everyone's mental health for it has separated us from loved ones, prevented us from celebrating important events, and just simply interrupted our normal everyday lives. Although this pandemic would not be described as apocalyptic, the human mind is notorious for overthinking and creating unrealistic scenarios, consequently, many people developed a lot of anxiety over quarantine. The solemn and blank expression on the girl's face illustrates the mental toll this pandemic has taken on her and her position of being in the foreground of the collage shows how she is physically isolated from every aspect of her social life. Normally, if you love someone, you show your affection by spending time with them, but now, you show your compassion by staying away from them (socially distanced and quarantined), in the hope to prevent the spread of germs and the possibility of getting them sick.
